We've talked about it before: the more unique and high-quality content you publish, the higher your site will rank in search engine results pages. But there are many other steps that can be taken as well, some of which might not seem all that important at first glance. That's why we're going to take a look at some of the most common SEO mistakes you should avoid if you want to rank higher on search engines.
#1) Improper Keyword Usage
Inconsistent URLs
This sounds like a nitpicky SEO tip, but URLs should be consistent. Consistency within the website will make it easier for visitors to navigate between pages, but this also makes life a lot easier for search engines as well. And when they can find the page they're looking for faster, Google will rank you higher. The URL should always remain in the same format and without any typos or underscores (even if it doesn't matter to your users). Making it search engine friendly is just as important as making it user-friendly.
Keyword stuffing
This goes without saying, but if you're going to try and rank high in the SERPs, you can't do it by stuffing your content with keywords. Keyword stuffing should be avoided at all costs; SEO professionals have been repeating this for years. Once we're talking about an appropriate use of a keyword, one or two strategically placed words might work wonders for your rankings. So if you don't want your hard work (and good name) to go up in smoke, keep an eye on how many times a certain word appears on any given page of content. One way this could be done is through the use of Google's AdWords Traffic Estimator tool, which lets you see what it would take to rank higher in the SERP with new on-page optimization.
Following trends over long-term strategies
Trends are great when they're short-term, but they can end up holding you back. Check your analytics and see what type of content has performed best in the past year, which will give you a better idea of what to create. Don't forget that consistency matters just as much as quality - keep writing high-quality content and publishing it on a regular basis!
